The Rescue


  • While living in Newport Beach, California on June 14, 1925, he rescued eight men from a capsized fishing vessel
  • It capsized because of heavy surf, and they were trying to enter the city's harbor
  • 29 fishermen when into the water and 17 passed away
  • Using his surfboard he was able to make quick trips to save the fishermen
  • Newports police chief called dukes efforts "the most superhuman surfboard reduce act the world has ever seen
