History of Surfing

  • Bodysurfing is the oldest type of wave catching
  • Surfing was developed by Polynesians
  • First described in 1769 by Joseph Banks on the HMS Endeavor during the third voyage of captain cook
  • The ruling class had the best boards and beaches, and the commoners weren't allowed on the same beaches, but could gain respect by their ability to surf on their bad boards
  • The Ali'i (chief) was the best surfer in the community, and had the best board make by the best tree
  • Hawaiians didn't believe that surfing was an activity, hobby, sport, or career
  • Hawaiians incorporated it into their culture, and thought it was more of an art form
  • Referred to this art as He'e Nalu (wave sliding)
  • Before entering the ocean the hawaiians would pray to the gods for protection and strength when entering the ocean
