- Boards made out of Koa (Acacia Koa), 'Ulu (Artocarpus altitis), Wiliwili (Erythrina sandwicensis) trees
- Once the surfer selected the type of wood he wanted they would dig the tree out and place a fish in the hole as an offering to the gods
- Selected craftsman shape, stain, and prepare the board for the surfer
- Three main shapes 'Olo, Kilo'o, and Alaia
- 'Olo is thick in the center, and gets thiner around the edges
- Kiko'o ranges from 12-18 feet, and requires a lot of skill to move that board in the ocean
- Alaia is abut 9 feet long, and requires much skill to ride the board
